DAY 2: Ateşgah – Kale Archeology and Ethnography Museum – Yanardağ – Haydar Aliyev Cultural Center
After breakfast at our hotel in the morning, we will visit the Ateshgah Architectural Complex, one of the three Zoroastrian Temples in the world, on the Absheron Peninsula. This structure, whose fire has not gone out for years, is one of the main pilgrimage places according to Zoroastrian belief. The cells and the chapel were built at different times, between the XVII-XIX centuries. “Ateshgah” was built by the Indian community belonging to the Sinkhlar sect, originally from northern India, who came to Baku and settled here. The earliest structure of the temple dates back to 1713. The central temple-altar was built by the Indian merchant Kanchanagaran in 1810. Ateşgah resembles city inns according to its structure. There is a fire in the middle of the temple that burns constantly day and night. Rumor has it that this used to be a natural fire, but now it is burned by natural gas coming from the well in the middle of the temple. There are small rooms around the burning fire in Ateşgah. Each of these rooms has a small window that overlooks the fire. In the past, Zoroastrians who came here for pilgrimage used to stay in these rooms, constantly watch the fire from the window and perform their worship by torturing themselves in various ways. After our trip to Ateşgah, we go to the Kale Open-Air Archeology and Ethnography Museum (Qala Archeology-Ethnographic Museum Complex), where the archaeological artifacts found on the Absheron peninsula are located. There are 216 architectural and archaeological works in the complex, which covers an area of 156 hectares. Among the artifacts found here, we see that the oldest historical artifact has been inhabited by people since the third thousand years BC. The complex was found on the Absheron peninsula and dates back to B.C. Rock paintings, ceramics, household and ornaments, weapons and coins covering the period of the III-II millennia are taken under protection and exhibited in the Castle - Archaeological (Open Air Museum) - Ethnography Museum complex.
After our visit to the Kale Open Air Archeology and Ethnography Museum, we will visit Yanardağ, which the famous Traveler Marco Polo called the "Land of Fire". Located in the region with rich oil and gas deposits, the "Yanardağ" was formed by the burning of gases coming to the surface of the earth as a result of tectonic events. We are sure that you will be interested in this mountain, which is located on an area of 65 hectares and has been burning for centuries due to the natural gas coming out from under it. Afterwards, we take a photo break in front of the Haydar Aliyev Cultural Center, which is considered one of the most important buildings in Azerbaijan.
